New laws in place to protect parents and carers within their employment.
Reasons to choose Wilson Browne
On May 25 2023 three new Acts in respect of ‘family-friendly’ working rights received Royal Assent, meaning they will become law in England and Wales. Once in force (the commencement date is still awaited), these new laws will increase protection afforded to parents and carers during their employment.
The new Acts are:
- The Neonatal Care (Leave and Pay) Act. This will allow eligible employed parents whose new-born baby is admitted to neonatal care to take up to 12 weeks of paid leave. This is in addition to other leave entitlements (e.g., maternity and paternity leave).
- The Protection from Redundancy (Pregnancy and Family Leave) Act. This will provide an extension of existing redundancy protections whilst on Maternity Leave, Adoption Leave or Shared Parental Leave. This Act extends protections so they cover a period of time after a new parent has returned to work.
- The Carer’s Leave Act. This will create a new statutory unpaid leave entitlement (up to five days) for employees who are caring for a dependant with a long-term care need.
Once the commencement date is announced, we will let you know.
